TrimTabs Asset Management is a money management firm focused on alpha-oriented strategies. Our methodology is informed by almost three decades of research and seven years of real time application.

  • TrimTabs Investment Research is founded by Charles Biderman as a leading independent institutional research firm focused on equity market liquidity.


    1990

  • TrimTabs Investment Research shifts focus from short selling to equity market liquidity research.


    1995

  • TrimTabs Investment Research starts daily collection of data on U.S. exchange-traded funds. Goldman Sachs purchases minority share in TrimTabs


    2007

  • TrimTabs Asset Management is founded with an aim to deliver alpha without paying high management fees.


    2008

  • TrimTabs begins subadvising TrimTabs Float Shrink ETF (TTFS).


    2011

  • TrimTabs Asset Management Trust is formed to launch TrimTabs family of actively managed free cash flow funds. The TrimTabs All Cap US Free-Cash-Flow ETF (TTAC) is launched.


    2016

  • TrimTabs Asset Management Launches the TrimTabs All Cap International Free-Cash-Flow ETF (TTAI)


    2017

  • TTAC crosses the $100mm AUM Milestone

TrimTabs gets its name from Buckminster Fuller, the American systems theorist and visionary who employed an aeronautical term to deliver the message that small adaptations can make big changes.

TrimTabs’s management team has broad investment management experience, with proven expertise in all areas of asset management.

  • Ted Theodore, CFA

    Vice Chairman & Chief Investment Officer

    Mr. Theodore has specialized both in portfolio management and investment strategy. In addition to being a senior portfolio manager at Citibank and Morgan Stanley, he was head of equity strategy at Citibank and author of the first published research analysis of growth vs. value investing while at Morgan Stanley. Ted was chair of the Asset Allocation Congress and has conducted half-day workshops on global active asset allocation. He was an early adopter of ETFs and started one of the first ETF strategist products in 1999. Ted earned both his MBA in Finance and his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, the New York Society of Security Analysts and the Market Technicians Association.

  • Jeff Lazar

    Chief Operating & Compliance Officer

    Mr. Lazar brings many years of operations and compliance experience in finance to TrimTabs, where he oversees compliance, human resources, and operations. Jeff has spent the last 35 years holding similar titles at a number of asset management firms focused on mutual funds, closed-end funds, and hedge funds. Before joining TrimTabs, Jeff served as Chief Operations Officer at Dasoma Capital Management, LLC, a startup global long/short hedge fund. From 1986 to 2003, Jeff served as Executive Vice President as well as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for Zweig Advisors Inc. and Zweig Total Return Fund, helping to grow assets to over $1.5 billion. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Ithaca College.

  • Janet Flanders Johnston, CFA

    Portfolio Manager

    Janet Flanders Johnston, CFA, is a Portfolio Manager at TrimTabs Asset Management, responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm’s two ETFs: US All-Cap Free Cash Flow (TTAC) and International All-Cap Free Cash Flow (TTAI). Ms. Johnston joined TrimTabs as Portfolio Manager in May 2017. Prior to joining TrimTabs, Ms. Johnston was managing her family’s premier timber and hunting business from 2015. In addition, Ms. Johnston was an ETF Advisor from 2012 to 2015 and a Managing Partner from 2011 to 2012 at Madrona Partners, Inc. She was a Senior Portfolio Manager and Senior Vice President for Avatar Associates from 2010 to 2011. Earlier in her career, Ms. Johnston was on the investment team where legendary investor, Martin Zweig, was Director of Research and Chairman of the Investment Committee. Ms. Johnston holds a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Georgia and is a CFA charter holder.

  • Alan Rubenfeld

    Director of Sales

    Mr. Rubenfeld previously worked in senior ETF sales positions for Financial Products LLC and QuantShares. Alan spent most of his career in senior sales positions at several leading global financial institutions. He was an Executive Director for Portfolio Trading and ETF sales at UBS, Managing Director in Institutional Relationship Management for BNP Paribas and Managing Director in Global Portfolio Trading and Transition Management for Deutsche Bank Securities. He is the author of The Super Traders: Secrets and Successes of Wall Street’s Best and Brightest (Dow Jones Irwin). Alan is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received both a BA in English Literature and a Masters in Business Administration.


  • Derin Cohen

    VP, Marketing and Operations

    Derin Cohen joined TrimTabs Asset Management in July 2017. Prior to joining TrimTabs, Derin performed internal operations audits covering mutual funds, closed-end funds, and exchange traded funds. Mr. Cohen manages the firm’s marketing campaigns and assists in various daily operations. Derin received his Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Economics from the State University of New York at Buffalo.


  • Vince (Qijun) Chen

    Quantitative Analyst

    Vince (Qijun) Chen is a Quantitative Analyst at TrimTabs Assets Management, focuses on bringing advanced quantitative analysis and mathematical modeling technique to develop the firm’s research division. He is responsible for the TTAM proprietary quantitative stock selection model development, empirical research support to Chief Investment Officer, and idea generation and implementation for new products. Vince received Master of Science in Quantitative Methods and Modeling from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, and Bachelor of Economics from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.


  • Jingtao Chen

    Quantitative Analyst

    Jingtao Chen joined Trimtabs Asset Management in June 2018. Jingtao works on portfolio analysis and risk management in support of portfolio construction and factor selection. Jingtao uses financial knowledge and quantitative analytics skills to improve data quality, contemplate new input and boost portfolio comprehensiveness. A graduate from NYU Tandon School of Engineering with his Masters in Financial Engineering, Jingtao holds all CFA and FRM exams, and received his Bachelor of Finance degree from Renmin University of China.
